How To Pay For Culinary School

Anyone looking to go to college or for any type of post secondary education knows about the amazingly high cost of higher education these days. The costs for going to college or even trade schools like culinary school are at levels that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. And unfortunately these rising costs are not slowing down, if anything they keep going up higher and faster. What is the prospective culinary student to do?

Too many people rely on student loans to finance higher education. It is easy to get almost any amount of money to pay for tuition, books and other materials, and living expenses.

The problem is that far too many students are only worrying about school in the short run and not about their ability to pay back their debt in the long run. Many of these people find themselves later in life to be overwhelmed by student loan debt that looks like it will take a lifetime to pay off, and in many cases it will indeed.

In particular culinary students should stay away from private student loans. The interest rates on these are far higher than for federal loans, and federal loans have many more guarantees. There are limits on the amount of money that can be borrowed, so students are often tempted to just take out private loans. On top of that there are many culinary schools that don’t have the accreditations to qualify for federal loans, so students are directed to private loans. Suffice it to say that private student loans can get you into serious financial trouble much more quickly than federal loans will.

It is a wise idea to consult with the financial aid office at your culinary school and see what scholarships, grants, and work study programs are available for you to apply for. All of these avenues are better choices than student loans.

Another good choice is online professional culinary training. Click here for a 15 day FREE trial to the Rouxbe Online Cooking School.
