Is Culinary School For Me?

You’ve always enjoyed working in the kitchen and creating great dishes. You get lots of satisfaction when you hear praise from your friends and family after preparing a good dish and hearing them talk about what a great chef you are. Your secret dream is to win a throwdown against Bobby Flay. You’re also thinking seriously about making cooking your career but you want to do it right. Is culinary school for you?

On the surface this might seem an easy question to answer. However, once you learn the cost of going to culinary school, which, like other forms of higher education, has risen exponentially for at least the past couple to decades, you have second thoughts.

Are the benefits of culinary school worth this large commitment? Let’s examine what going to culinary school has to offer and if it is right for you.

First of all you will have to choose the right program since there are over 1,000 culinary school offerings today. You would do well to choose a school with strong accreditation, because schools like that let you qualify for federal student loans and you won’t have to resort to private student loans. Private student loans do not have the benefits of federal student loans, and they will certainly have higher interest rates. In general students are advised to stay away from private student loans as these can get you into deep financial trouble later on. By clicking here you can get free information about the top culinary school programs in the U.S.

In culinary school you will be given a comprehensive course of study in many aspects of the food and beverage industry. You will learn how to vastly improve your cooking skills with the use of many types of fresh vegetables, spices and other flavorings. You will learn about expertly preparing different kinds of meats, poultry and sea food. You’ll learn to make luscious looking salads. You’ll probably have numerous courses on pastry and deserts. You’ll learn a lot about wine, how it is made, how to properly taste and evaluate wine and most importantly how to pair it with main dishes. And last but not least you will learn about restaurant management and the financial side of a food related business. You’ll be able to practice these skills in the in-house restaurant of the culinary school itself, and you’ll also have opportunities to work and learn in externships where you’ll get to work in the kitchens of established restaurants which the culinary school has relationships with.

So is culinary school for you? You could learn these skills by starting from the bottom and working your way up in a restaurant, but it would take many years, maybe most of your working life. That is the advantage of going to culinary school.
